There are twelve months in the Islamic calendar, and each month begins and ends on the day in which the crescent of the new moon is first sighted. Each month threrefore spans one lunar cycle, and is between 28 and 30 days long. This means that the Islamic year is ten or eleven days shorter than the solar year, and the months start earlier in each succesive year (according to the Gregorian calendar). In 2022, Ramadan started on 13 April; in 2025 it will start on 1 March.
